## My ranked shortlist for dashboards and reporting This is **not a literal poll of AI models**; it is my buyer-oriented ranking based on product maturity, breadth, governance, usability, ecosystem fit, and the current BI market. A 2025 Gartner market overview identifies all of these types of established vendors—including Microsoft, Salesforce/Tableau, Google, Qlik, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, Domo, and GoodData—as credible ABI-platform players. ([gartner.com](https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/6576602?utm_source=openai)) 1. **Microsoft Power BI** — **Best default choice for most companies**, particularly Microsoft 365/Azure shops, because it combines strong semantic modeling, interactive dashboards, governed sharing, scheduled refresh, security, and polished paginated reporting in one widely deployable platform. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/fundamentals/power-bi-overview?utm_source=openai)) 2. **Tableau** — Choose it when exceptional visual exploration and analyst-led storytelling matter more than lowest total cost; it remains the strongest conventional visualization-first platform, with mature cloud and self-hosted options. ([help.tableau.com](https://help.tableau.com/current/tableau/en-us/tableau_product_overview.htm?utm_source=openai)) 3. **Google Looker** — Best for data-mature organizations that want a code-managed semantic layer and consistent governed metrics across self-service analysis, because LookML defines business logic once and makes it reusable in user queries. ([docs.cloud.google.com](https://docs.cloud.google.com/looker/docs/what-is-lookml?utm_source=openai)) 4. **Sigma Computing** — My top pick for Snowflake- or cloud-warehouse-centric teams whose business users live in spreadsheets, since its workbooks support both ad hoc exploration and durable reporting with tables, controls, charts, and embedded analytics. ([help.sigmacomputing.com](https://help.sigmacomputing.com/docs/create-a-workbook?utm_source=openai)) 5. **Qlik Cloud Analytics** — A strong enterprise alternative when associative exploration, broad integration, governed self-service, operational reporting, and alerting are key requirements; its data-association approach can reveal relationships that query-only workflows may miss. ([help.qlik.com](https://help.qlik.com/en-US/cloud-services/Subsystems/Hub/Content/Global_Common/HelpSites/introducing-qlik-cloud.htm?utm_source=openai)) 6. **ThoughtSpot** — Best when the goal is to let nontechnical users search and ask questions of data rather than navigate lots of prebuilt reports; its Liveboards provide the conventional interactive-chart-and-table dashboard experience alongside search-led analytics. ([docs.thoughtspot.com](https://docs.thoughtspot.com/cloud/10.13.0.cl/_attachments/ts-cloud-get-started.pdf?utm_source=openai)) 7. **Metabase** — The best practical lower-cost and open-source-friendly choice for many small-to-mid-sized teams, offering approachable no/low-SQL questions, interactive filtered dashboards, subscriptions, Slack/email delivery, and self-hosting. ([metabase.com](https://www.metabase.com/docs/latest/?utm_source=openai)) 8. **Amazon QuickSight** — Pick it primarily for AWS-centric deployments or customer-facing embedded dashboards where minimizing infrastructure overhead and keeping analytics close to AWS data sources outweighs a preference for the richest authoring experience. ([docs.aws.amazon.com](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/en_us/quicksight/latest/user/how-quicksight-works.html?utm_source=openai)) 9. **GoodData** — A compelling specialized option for software companies building embedded analytics into their own products, especially where a branded, programmable dashboard experience and capabilities such as filtering, drilldowns, email scheduling, exports, and embedding matter. ([gooddata.com](https://www.gooddata.com/docs/gooddata-ui/latest/learn/embed_dashboards/?utm_source=openai)) 10. **Apache Superset** — The strongest open-source choice for engineering-led organizations that can operate their own BI stack and value SQL flexibility, extensibility, broad database connectivity, and configurable dashboard/report distribution over turnkey business-user polish. ([superset.apache.org](https://superset.apache.org/docs/?utm_source=openai)) ## Genuine recommendation If you gave me no further context, I would buy **Power BI** for a typical company—especially one already paying for Microsoft 365—and run a short proof of concept against **Tableau** only if visual-analysis quality is mission-critical. I would instead choose **Looker** for a company that has strong analytics engineering and needs centrally defined metrics, **Sigma** for a Snowflake-forward team with spreadsheet-oriented business users, and **Metabase** if budget, speed, or self-hosting matters more than enterprise-depth governance. Do not select based mainly on AI/chat features: first prove the tool against your real data model, row-level security, refresh performance, export/print requirements, embedded use case (if any), and the ability of ordinary business users to answer their own questions without creating metric chaos.

How this ranking is measured1,560 queries · 3 models · updated this weekLive data
This is the public record for Business Intelligence Tools: the same questions, every model, every week. We ask each model the real questions buyers ask in this category and record which brands it recommends and in what order. A brand recommended at position i scores 100 × 0.85^(i−1) for that model (#1 = 100, #2 = 85, #3 = 72, …); unmentioned brands score 0.
Each model is ranked independently, so the columns disagree when the models disagree. The consensus score is the mean across the 3models recorded this week, and movement compares against last week’s close.
We report what the models say. We don’t editorialize, and brands can’t pay to change their position.
This ranking is live: the numbers come from recorded model answers captured through the official model APIs, scored with the published formula above. The raw answers are on this page under “The receipts.”
- What we measure
- We measure on the official model APIs: the same question, the same settings, the same week, for every brand. Web search is on, so the models can draw on what is live on the web. Nothing is personalized to a user, which is what makes the columns comparable.
- What we don’t
- The consumer apps are a different surface. What a person sees inside a chat app can carry memory, personalization, and live experiments on top of the same model, so its answers can differ from the API’s. We do not measure that surface yet. True browser listings, recorded from the consumer apps, arrive with WDIR Ranked, the Pro product. WDIR Ranked · Coming soon
